The "Plein Air Girls'

A friend and I took off for the day down to Nowra to organise the "PLEIN AIR GIRLS " exhibition scheduled for October 2010..It is quite exciting for us to be accepted to exhibit at the fabulous Shoalhaven City Arts Centre..I will post the invitation on the blog next year..you are all invited ! Our little painting group has expanded to about 16 members now of which 10 are exhibiting their paintings that are a result of our trips to NSW regions . We aim to arrange several painting trips a year to a diverse area ..from outback to coastal ..So far we have visited Glen Davis, the Colo River , Little Hartley in the Blue Mountains , Bundeena in the Royal National Park and Exeter on the Southern Highlands..Our next adventure is to Sofala near Hill End in the west of the state..so looking forward to a few days of uninterrupted painting with great companions..a few sips of bubbly at the end of the day and good food provided...

On the way back from the Shoalhaven we called into a horse stud where I know the manager to check out some good painting spots ..hope to get there this week if the weather clears..

FLAT OUT !

I haven't had anything to put on the blog lately ..not because I am not painting ..because I have been flat out painting lots of top secret stuff and because I am sworn to secrecy and I know that the wives, sons and daughters all watch this blog , I can't put them up for all to see..you will all just have to wait to see these lovely paintings until after the special occasions that they have been commissioned for .. the weather here has been pretty disgusting over the last few days..we had an unbelievable red dust storm on Tuesday and we are still trying to clean up ..

This painting is a pastel that I completed a couple of years ago ..I haven't done many pastels since but I really did enjoy painting with them ..

RIVER VIEW

I completed this little painting on location on a 'Plein Air Girl's ' trip to Bundeena .I liked the way that the light was skipping across the water and tried to capture this on the day..

COLO RIVER

I was going through my art folder the other week looking for some drawings to put into the life drawing exhibition when I came across this watercolour that I did plein air on the Colo River trip with the girls a couple of years ago . I remember now that I was so disgusted by my first plein air attempt that I tossed it into the folder without giving it much thought and probably thought at the time that it was unredeamable ..Well as most watercolourists will tell you you must take another look at your work the next day after painting as often what can look like a disaster can look somewhat passable after the paper has tried thoroughly and the paint has done its magic work ..I got quite excited as I lifted it out of the folder to see that it wasn't half as bad as I had thought on the day of painting ..just needed a bit of tweeking and I think that now I would be happy to frame it ..Unfortunately the camera has washed out some of the colour as it is much richer in real life..darn I will master it one day ! Anyway this is a watercolour on Arches paper that I did on location at Colo River..I am pleased that I managed to capture the mystical feel of this tranquil place as the sandy river meanders through high rocky cliffs with the Casaurina trees lining the banks and creating cool breezes on a hot day..and I can tell you that after a week of being very sick with the flu it has been uplifting to revisit this place in my mind and hopefully another plein air trip in the near future
